The Cairns/Kuranda area is a great birding destination with a number of excellent birding sites in the immediate locality and more spread throughout the whole of the Cairns Highlands area.
Staying at Cassowary House offers easy access to all these great sites and is a natural and convenient centre for exploring the entire Cairns Highlands area.
With its large, airy, en suite rooms with private verandahs overlooking the gardens and surrounding rainforest Cassowary House is a great place to relax and go birding. Each room is screened and has its own fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. The food is excellent and special diets are catered for. Enjoy breakfast with the birds on our forest vista verandah with Victoria's Riflebird, Spotted Catbird, Black Butcherbird, Macleay's, Yellow- spotted and Graceful Honeyeaters amongst your breakfast companions. You may be lucky with Cassowaries and Red-necked Crakes joining the musky rat-kangaroos on the forest floor below. Wireless internet is available in the main house.
We also offer a range of guided birding and general natural history tours led by our very experienced guides. Check them out on Local Area Tours or enquire about customised trips. Let us know if you have any special interests and also your level of birding. Photographers are welcome but please let us know if this is your main interest Tours can be arranged on demand provided the guides are not already booked.
We suggest stays of at least three nights to explore the immediate local area and longer if you would like to make us your base for exploring the Cairns Highlands. Why not make Cassowary House your base for the exploration of this superb birding destination?
